What to bring

Field Gear

Clothing:

• 7 tee shirts and or tank-tops
• 4 pair of shorts and a bathing suit - ones that dry quickly
• lots of socks and underwear
• 5 pair of light weight pants - pants with many pockets are recommended. Pants with legs that zip-off into shorts are very convenient.
• 4-6 long-sleeve work shirts,
• Medium size towel - large enough to dry off and small enough to pack around
• Well-fitting, knee-high rubber boots - you can get these in Costa Rica if your feet aren’t too large
• hiking boots
• sandals – the strong sport type
• sun hat or cap
• light weight raincoat

Equipment:

• Flashlight and EXTRA batteries - LED head lamps come in handy
• Data book, all-weather pen, and permanent black markers
• Water bottle or canteen - essential!
• Pocket knife – remember to pack it in a checked bag
• 1-gallon size zip lock bags - to protect personal items from moisture
• insect repellent
• 10x or 15x magnifying glass
• waterproof wrist watch
• day pack/book bag
• scientific calculator and instructions on its use
• millimeter graph paper, note book paper:
• light work gloves
• large back pack

Health Items:

• If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair if possible
• small personal first aid kit - Band-Aids, antibiotic cream, anesthetic ointment, Tylenol OR ALEVE cold tablets, antihistamine, 2% BENEDRYL cream, decongestant, elastic bandage for sprains, gauze, etc.
• sunscreen
• sunglasses

Campus Gear:

• casual school clothing
• light sweater - the average temperature in San Jose is 78° F during the day but nights can be chilly
• umbrella or casual rain jacket
• notebooks and pens
• shoes – for going out and sneakers - for class
• work-out gear - for jogging, biking, swimming, etc.

Optional Items:

• Camera and film - water resistant digitals with ample memory work great
• Water proof belly pack
• Video camcorder – the program has one but you may want one of your own
• tape recorder
• sewing kit – surprisingly handy, don’t bother your host mom
• laptop computer - water resistant case recommended
• sleeping bag - a light one is fine and will only be needed on two of our field trips
• Mountain bike – with a good lock
• Binoculars (7 x 35 or 8 x 40) – very handy
